Director of Fraternity & Sorority Life
Position Description:
The Director will be responsible for providing vision and leadership for the Office of Fraternity & Sorority Life; supervising the Office of Fraternity & Sorority Life staff including graduate assistant and graduate interns; working closely with the Panhellenic, IFC and NPHC Advisors, and other fraternity and sorority leaders; developing and managing goals and priorities for a values-based fraternity & sorority community; monitoring compliance of office and university policies, particularly related to health and safety of students and student organizations; overseeing development and distribution of online and printed publications and marketing materials; assessing effectiveness of Office of Fraternity & Sorority Life and council programs, services, and initiatives; providing oversight for the review and enhancement of judicial processes and providing support to the Office of Student Conduct on investigation and adjudication of other organizational misconduct; serving as a member of the Division’s on-call duty team; developing and maintaining relationships and clear lines of communication with chapter advisors; serving on various university committees. The Director must be available to respond to a crisis, which may occur at any time in a 24-hour period. This position also has the responsibility of assisting with the Commuter Students and non-traditional students.
Responsibilities:
Supervise all Fraternity & Sorority Life staff including undergraduate and graduate staff members and AFSCME support staff members.
Fraternity & Sorority Life
- Oversight and support for the Inter-Fraternity Council (IFC), the Collegiate Panhellenic Council, National Pan Hellenic Council, Order of Omega, & Greek Week—overseeing all meetings, judicial processes, financial expenditures, leadership training, and related matters.
- Assists the Inter-Fraternity Council and the Collegiate Panhellenic Council with the development and implementation of aspects of membership recruitment and new member education.
- Assists fraternity and sorority chapters with selecting and maintaining chapter advisors.
- Oversees expansion of new fraternities and sororities in accordance with University and Fraternity & Sorority Life policies.
- Prepares and disseminates data and information about recognized fraternities and sororities.
- Maintains contact with both local advisors and inter/national offices with respect to the development and status of recognized chapters.
- Meets regularly with the leaders of the individual fraternity & sorority organizations in order to facilitate cooperation, idea sharing, and the sustainability/improvement of the fraternity & sorority community.
- Develops and implements engaging community-based programming in the areas of chapter management, membership development, academic excellence, and community engagement.
- Works with the Dean of Students office, and national offices and the campus judicial system to coordinate fraternity and sorority life conduct investigations and ensure the process and potential sanctions are congruent with proper procedures.
- Ensure education, training, and advisement of harm reduction practices and procedures.
- Participate in the State System FSL working group to support collaboration for fraternity & sorority efforts across PASSHE.
- Maintains up-to-date and cohesive policy that is in accordance with university policy, national standards for fraternities and sororities, and all local, state, and federal laws.
- Develops, implements, and circulates tools to assess and evaluate departmental programs.
- Participates in the university on-call duty process and will be on-call various nights and some weekends throughout the academic year.
- Represent the department to outside stakeholders at events such as new student orientation, campus open houses, etc. as well as to university committees and working groups.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Commuter Students and Non-traditional Students
- Oversight of the commuter student support system
- Oversee the operation of the Commuter Lounge
- Liaison between the university and apartment complexes
- Help build and support programming and training for commuter and non-traditional students in efforts around retention/education.
- Send out a weekly newsletter to all commuter/Non-traditional students, oversee all targeted marketing around nontraditional needs and services.
- Organize annual events such as campus clean-up.
- Oversee the Raider Neighbor Program.
Minimum Qualifications:
Qualified candidates will have a Master’s Degree from a regionally accredited institution; and five years of progressively responsible experience in positions within the field of fraternity and sorority life, student leadership, residence life or related that clearly shows an upward progression in the level of duties and responsibilities from one job to the next. Ability to take initiative and plan, organize, coordinate, and perform work in complex situations where competing priorities exist; understanding of the importance of a student-centered philosophy; demonstrated supervisory and budget management experience; demonstrated experience building partnerships and relating effectively with a diverse range of constituents and stakeholders; demonstrated ability to plan, organize, implement and assess training, leadership development, and educational programs; effective interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills; demonstrated understanding of the role of fraternity and sorority chapter advisors and national organizations; demonstrated experience mitigating risk related to college students in fraternities and sororities; demonstrated ability to work collaboratively. Knowledge of National Interfraternity Conference (NIC), National Pan-Hellenic Conference (NPC), and National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) regulations and student related Greek Life issues. Preferred Qualifications:
Experience working with and/or advising fraternities/sororities and advising inter-fraternity/sorority councils is preferred.
Experience with risk management policies and with program design, delivery and facilitation for student leadership training and development is also preferred.
